Shottesbrooke

Shottesbrooke
Wines from McLaren Vale, Australia.
Looking for distributors globally

Our History

Established in 1984 Shottesbrooke Vineyards began with the first planting of vines by founder Nick Holmes. The vineyard was named after an estate in Berkshire, England, where Nick’s grandfather, Richard Holmes, was the parish vicar from 1905 to 1926. The Shottesbrooke label is adapted from the wonderful stained glass window in the transept of the church.

Nick purchased a small grazing property at Myponga in the hills of the Fleurieu Peninsula in 1981 to establish his first vineyard and launch the Shottesbrooke wine label. In 1989, he acquired more land at McLaren Flat where the premium red varieties are grown. This is now home to the Shottesbrooke cellar door and winery.

Today, Shottesbrooke is proudly an estate grown and managed boutique winery. The company is focused on producing high quality wines and has a commitment to grow and expand its distribution while remaining a genuine boutique producer.

Vineyards

Great wines can only be made from great grapes.

At Shottesbrooke we carefully nurture vines to produce the grapes required to make quality wines. Each phase of the annual growing cycle is analysed using the most up-to-date techniques to assess vine health and balance. That information is then used to implement management strategies that ensure production of the highest quality grapes, whilst minimising environmental impact.

Shottesbrooke vineyards are composed of a wide range of terroirs; sands through to black cracking clay. Such is the variation in mesoclimate and soil type from one patch of grapes to the next, that we assess water requirements for each individual vineyard, only applying water as required. Our soil is so important to us that in recent years we introduced lighter, more efficient machinery to reduce soil compaction.

Our Products

Reserve Series // ‘Eliza’ Shiraz 2010

Vineyards

We select fruit for this Shiraz from an individual patch of vineyard on our McLaren Flat property, planted in 1994. The soil is deep sandy loam of moderate fertility and produces low yields of high quality fruit. Limited irrigation ensures the grapes reach full maturity in prime condition. These vines are pruned to produce low yields which fluctuate slightly on seasonal variation.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Intense and brooding red with subtle purple hues
Nose: Aromas of dark chocolate, coconut and dried herb along with distinct smoky, cedary oak.
Palate: A complex, multi layered palate with spicy black pepper, dark berry fruits and smoky overtones from barrel fermentation. This full bodied wine is beautifully supported by fine grained, soft, velvety tannins.
Cellaring: Now, until 2025
Food Match: Full flavoured meat dishes, ideal with roast lamb or beef

Estate Series // Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Winemaking

The Reynell clone Cabernet Sauvignon was picked at optimum ripeness on the 19th of March 2012, and the DV10 yeast strain was specifically chosen during fermentation to naturally enhance the intensity of flavour.
The resultant wine featured appealing, dominant blueberry and blackberry characters. A portion was then stored in a variety of 1-3 year old French and American oak barrels prior to blending, bottling and release.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Dark purple hue with great depth of colour
Nose: A fragrant bouquet of blackcurrant, cherry and subtle mint supported by a backdrop of fine, cedary oak.
Palate: A medium to full bodied palate displaying concentrated blueberry and boysenberry flavours. A good balance of fruit and oak, whilst filling the mouth with texture and fine grain tannin.
Cellaring: Now until 2024
Food Match: Chargrilled steak with slow roasted root vegetables

Estate Series // Shiraz 2012

Winemaking

Our Estate Series Shiraz is the essence of McLaren Vale. Our home grown and managed vineyards cover a wide range of soil types and profiles, each contributing layers of complexity to this full flavoured wine.
Picked over a period of two weeks, this full bodied Shiraz was traditionally vinified and then matured in a combination of one, two and three year old hogshead barrels for between 12 and 16 months.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Deep, dense red.
Nose: Aromas of blueberries and raspberries interplay with subtle spice overtones.
Palate: Like the bouquet, the elegant, fleshy palate delivers delightful flavours of raspberries and understated white pepper, whilst being supported by fine, supple tannins.
Cellaring: Now until 2022
Food Match: Indian spiced lamb cutlets.

Single Vineyard // ‘Scarce Earth’ Shiraz 2012

Winemaking

The fruit was harvested on the 14th of March 2012 during the cool of the morning and delivered to the winery for destemming and crushing. The must then spent 10 days on skins before being gently pressed to stainless steel tanks to complete maloloactic fermentation. Once malolactic fermentation was completed the wine was transferred to three year old French hogsheads where it matured for a further 12 months.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Bright crimson red
Nose: A fragrant and engaging bouquet of white pepper, fresh sage, cured meats, strawberry, with a touch of aniseed.
Palate: The medium weighted palate displays notes of raspberry and delicate fruit superbly complemented by fine, chalky tannins. There’s no doubt that this wine shows personality!
Cellaring: Until 2019
Food Match: Chargrilled kangaroo steak with a chilli tomato salsa
