THE BIRTH OF ROMAN CANDY RUM In 1915, the City of New Orleans got a treat from Sam Cortese, the son of Italian Immigrants from Sicily. Sam began making and selling hand pulled taffy made from molasses from an old family recipe. He traveled the streets of New Orleans making and selling his chocolate, vanilla and strawberry taffy from a handmade, mule drawn wooden wagon every day. Sam knew the virtues of the sweet tasting confection, and what could be done with molasses. Today, that tradition continues as the fourth generation of the Roman Chewing Candy still travels the streets of New Orleans today in the original wagon that Sam built, selling the taffy that so many have enjoyed since it was first introduced. Four generations later, the family history and tradition of making sweet confections, once again, arises. People all over the world have enjoyed the sweet, delectable flavor of the chocolate, vanilla and strawberry taffy, and now, they bring another New Orleans family tradition to New Orleans and the world, that embodies what Sam would’ve wanted for everyone to enjoy.
