American Wine Society

The American Wine Society was organized in 1967 as a non-profit, educational, consumer-oriented organization for those interested in learning more about all aspects of wine. On October 7, 1967, around 200 grape growers, home winemakers, and wine lovers gathered at Dr. Konstantin Frank’s vineyard on Keuka Lake near Hammondsport, NY for the AWS’ initial meeting. In December of the same year, the thirteen charter members, led by Founder Dr. Konstantin Frank, met to determine the organization structure of AWS and elect officers. Now in its 46th year, the American Wine Society is the largest consumer based wine education organization in North America. Membership is open to anyone interested in wine and over 21 years of age.
In the early days, AWS members were located primarily in the eastern part of the country. As the society grew , we established chapters throughout the eastern U.S., then into the south and Midwest, and finally into western states. Today, the American Wine Society has over 4,000 members in 45 states and 120 chapters across the U.S.
The emphasis of AWS also evolved through the years as we reached more and more wine lovers. Most early members were winemakers and we continue to value this key segment of the society. Even today, 30% of AWS members are amateur winemakers - a fact we are very proud of. The society was focused primarily on American wines in the early years, but great wine can be made anywhere and today, AWS members want to learn about wines from all corners of the globe.

California Wine Club – California

Thank you for taking the time to visit our website and learn about our wine of the month programs!
For years Pam and I were frustrated trying to find truly great wine. Selecting a decent bottle of wine from thousands of pretty labels with prices ranging from $5-$35 was difficult at the best of times. We were always happiest with wine recommendations from friends.
So, that's what we wanted to do with The California Wine Club, start a wine of the month club that was just like "one friend recommending a great bottle of wine to another friend".
We are now celebrating 23 years of business and the wine adventures keep getting better! Pam and I knew that there were hundreds of small, family-owned wineries dedicated to producing exceptional wine ... and it was this wine that we wanted to share with our monthly wine club members. Each month we travel California's wine country searching out the wineries, meeting the families and tasting the wines that never make it to local stores or wine shops.

Anderson Valley Winegrowers Association – California

The Anderson Valley is located in the rolling hills of the coastal region of Mendocino County, about two hours north of San Francisco. Only fifteen miles long, this beautiful valley is home to a unique group of vineyards and wineries producing a broad range of excellent wines. Whether you are an experienced wine aficionado, or are just discovering the pleasure of drinking good wine, the Anderson Valley deserves exploration. Known for our world class Pinot Noir and Alsace Varietals, we offer a great wine tasting destination. Our tasting rooms range from a picnic table at a backyard winery to a beautiful salon at a sleek, modern facility. Browse through our website for lots of information about our wineries and growers and also many of the other attractions in the valley.

Wine growing and winemaking are such important parts of Anderson Valley today that it seems strange to realize that they are relative newcomers.

White men first came to Mendocino County in the 1830s, when Mexican officials made several large land grants in the Russian River Valley. Throughout the Mexican era in California history, Anderson Valley remained undisturbed as a homeland of the native Pomo Indians. Even the acquisition of California by the United States brought few changes.
What did bring about rapid change in the state--change which eventually reached even a tiny, remote Mendocino valley--was the discovery of gold. People rushed into California from all over the world in an effort to strike it rich in the foothills of the distant Sierra Nevada. More people meant more pressure to find new land for farming and ranching.
